Objective
The overall aim of this project is to provide the technical basis for the preparation of European guidelines on the design of coastal structures. Existing knowledge and data which is presently dispersed through national research institutes will be collated, and new theoretical and experimental research will be carried out.
The project has three main themes: 1) Wave action on and in coastal structures. A physicallybased numerical formulation will be developed for water motion due to wave action on a smooth slope, as well as on and in a porous rubble structure. 2) Wave impact loading on vertical structures. Reliable methods will be developed for predicting forces exerted by breaking waves on vertical structures, including the effects of dynamic response. 3) Rubble mound and berm breakwaters. Studies will mainly investigate the effects of wave directionality on the stability of rubble-mound breakwaters, as well as the complex relationship between wave climate and structure response for berm breakwaters.
