General Information PAH are included in the black list of EC-directive 76/464/EEC owing to the quantities used and discharged, and their toxicological properties. For environmental management, PAH are frequently determined in fresh water sediments. Comparison of the degree of PAH-contamination between different countries is virtually impossible owing to interlaboratory differences. They can be minimized with the use of a freshwater sediment reference material. The objective of this project is to produce a sediment reference material certified for various polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
Achievements : The material has been prepared, stabilized and packed in 4,600 bottles. The packed material has been tested over a period of 12 months and found be stable at -20oC and +20oC; at +40oC an instability cannot be excluded. The packed material tested on homogeneity at a 500 mg sample intake level. The certification was performed by 16 laboratories. The results are subject to statistical evaluation and the material certified as CRM535. It is now commercially available.
