Objective
The aim of the project is to demonstrate the feasibility of a new technique for the measurement of surface strains and displacement fields in sheet components, produced by different manufacturing processes, such as deep drawing of metal sheet or moulding of plastic and organic compounds. The measurement is done by measuring the deformation of a grid which is printed on the blank sheet before manufacturing.
The technique will overcome the problem of hidden areas on the component. It should be possible to handle components with cracks and zones, which have been wiped off during the forming process. The system should offer the potential to use different lenses with different view sizes, in order to optimize speed and accuracy according to the demands of future needs.
It is the objective of this project to create a measuring technique capable of fast, extended and accurate measurements on real scale components of up to one meter size or more whilst maintaining accuracy better then 1 % in strain over of the whole area and presenting results within 24 hours after mounting a component on the instrument. The degree of automation should be such as to restrict operator intervention to be less than 2 hours. (Mounting of component and interpretation of results excluded).
