Objective
THE ANALYSIS OF THE INTERNATIONAL IUFRO-PROVENANCE EXPERIMENT ON NORWAY SPRUCE FROM 1964/68, IN WHICH 1100 SEED SOURCES HAVE BEEN INCLUDED, YIELDED THE FIRST RESULTS. CERTAIN PROVENANCES HAVE SHOWN SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER GROWTH THAN THE AVERAGE AND IN CERTAIN PROVENANCE REGIONS IN EASTERN EUROPE WELL GROWING PROVENANCES OCCUR MORE FREQUENTLY THAN IN OTHER PARTS OF EUROPE. BASED ON THIS INTERNATIONAL INVENTORY PROVENANCE EXPERIMENT THE FOLLOWING RESEARCH WILL BE CARRIED OUT:
A) IMPROVEMENT OF THE METHODS OF ANALYSIS OF THE MENTIONED EXPERIMENT IN ORDER TO ELIMINATE MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY CAUSED VARIATION. INVESTIGATION ON THE STABILITY OF GROWTH OF PROVENANCES UNDER VARYING SITE CONDITIONS BY INCLUSION OF SEVERAL EXPERIMENTS (ESPECIALLY FROM CENTRAL EUROPE) IN AN OVERALL EVALUATION (AUSTRIA, BELGIUM AND PROBABLY FRANCE, USSR, HUNGARY AND SOUTHERN SWEDEN).
B) RECONNAISSANCE IF THE STANDS OF THE OUTSTANDING TESTED PROVENANCES ARE STILL EXISTENT, IF THEY ARE REPRESENTATIVE OF THE STANDS IN THAT REGION AND IF THEY ARE SUITED FOR SEED COLLECTION.
SELECTION OF FURTHER STANDS IN PROMISING REGIONS, WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO SNOW BREAK ZONES AND FROSTHOLES. COLLECTION OF SEED.
C) SELECTION OF THE BEST CLONES WITHIN THE BEST PROVENANCES OF THE INTERNATIONAL IUFRO PROVENANCE EXPERIMENT AND TESTING THEM IN COMPARISON WITH KNOWN, WELL GROWING PROVENANCES.
D) ESTABLISHMENT OF A CLONE COLLECTION (SEED ORCHARD) OF THESE SELECTED CLONES. PRESERVATION OF THE IUFRO EXPERIMENTS BY WORKING OUT A SPECIAL THINNING METHOD AND BY PROTECTION FROM EXTERNAL INFLUENCES.
