Objective
SYNTHESIS OF ETHANOL BY ENZYMATIC HYDROLISIS OF BARK - DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW PRETREATMENT - TRANSFORMATION OF HEMICELLULOSE AND LIGNIN INTO USEFUL ORGANIC COMPOUNDS.
VARIOUS POSSIBLE PATHWAYS FOR THE ENZYMATIC HYDROLISIS WILL BE TESTED.
1. UTILIZATION OF BARK AS SUBSTRATES.
THE QUANTITY OF WASTE BARK IS VERY IMPORTANT IN THE WORLD.
MORE THAN 150,000 M3 WASTE BARK WILL BE AVAILABLE SIMPLY FOR BELGIUM BEFORE YEAR 2000. VALORIZATION OF BARK INTO ETHANOL AND USEFUL CHEMICALS HAS NOT BEEN STUDIED.
2. TRANSFORMATION OF HEMICELLULOSE INTO NEW CHEMICALS (SURFACTANTS AND LIQUID CRYSTALS).
THE C5 SUGARS DERIVED FROM THE HEMICELLULOSES CAN BE CONVERTED INTO USEFUL CHEMICALS BY SOME FERMENTATION PROCESSES, BUT IN MANY CASES THEY ARE LOST. A NEW FAMILY OF ORGANIC PRODUCTS DERIVED FROM C5 SUGARS WHICH HAVE SURFACTANT AND LIQUID CRYSTALLINE PROPERTIES HAVE BEEN SYNTHETIZED. A STUDY OF THEIR PROPERTIES AND POSSIBILITIES OF INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT WILL BE PERFORMED.
3. USE OF A NEW PRETREATMENT PROCESS (R).
THIS PRETREATMENT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED AND HAS BEEN RECENTLY PATENTED. IT SEEMS TO BE SCIENTIFICALLY AND ECONOMICALLY SUITABLE. IT WILL BE APPLIED TO THE HYDROLYSIS OF BARK.
4. VALORISATION OF LIGNIN
A NEW TYPE OF SUBSTITUTED LIGNIN IS OBTAINED BY THIS PROCESS. IT HAS TO BE CHARACTERIZED AND ITS PROPERTIES TESTED AS SOLVENT, BASIC CHEMICALS, SURFACTANT, ADDITIVES IN VARIOUS FIELDS....
