Objective
- INTRODUCTION : PRELIMINARY DESCRIPTION OF ENVIRONMENT IN COVERED AREA(FOREST STATISTICS, OWNERSHIP STRUCTURE OF WOOD HARVESTING AND STATISTICS ABOUT HARVESTED PRODUCTS) AND OF EXISTING SMALL TIMBER HARVESTING METHODS AND EQUIPMENT(WORKING PROCESSES, THEIR PRODUCTIVITY AND COST).
- RESEARCH BY EXPERIMENT WILL COMPARE BOTH ENTIRE LOG AND SHORTWOOD SYSTEMS, WITH MANUAL AND MOTORMANUAL MEANS, AND WITH MULTIFUNCTIONAL MOBILE MACHINES AS WELL AS CENTRALIZED YARDS WITH LOW AND AVERAGE MECHANIZATION.
ALL THESE ITEMS WILL BE TESTED AND OBSERVED UNDER FOLLOWING CONDITIONS:
- AVERAGE VOLUME PER TREE : 3 VARIABLES(LESS THAN 0,100 M3; FROM 0,100 TO 0,250 M3; FROM 0,250 TO 0,500 M3 PER TREE).
- THINNING METHOD:
- SELECTIVE THINNING
- SELECTIVE BLOCK THINNING
- SYSTEMETIC ROW THINNING.
EXPERIMENTATION WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN BELGIUM AND LUXEMBOURG, IN FIRST THINNING OPERATIONS.
OBSERVATIONS WILL BE CARRIED OUT ON ALL FACTORS HAVING AN INFLUENCE ON PRODUCTIVITY AND COST : COMMENTS WILL INCLUDE TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC ASPECTS, AND WILL EMPHASIZE THE INFLUENCE OF THE SIZE OF THE HARVESTING PARCELS.
APPLICATION OF CONCLUSIONS WILL BE POSSIBLE OUTSIDE THE COUNTRIES OF EXPERIMENTATION, WHERE BASIC CONDITIONS ARE OFTEN COMPARABLE, E.G. IN PARTS OF GERMANY, FRANCE AND DENMARK.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
