DETERMINATION OF WOOD QUALITY OF STANDING TREES BY A NON-DESTRUCTIVE PROCESS

Objetivo

THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS STUDY IS TO DEVELOP A NON-DESTRUCTIVE PROCESS BY WHICH WOOD QUALITY OF STANDING TREES CAN BE DETERMINED AND INDEXED INTO END-USE CATEGORIES, NAMELY : STRUCTURAL, NON-STRUCTURAL, AND PULP AND PAPER. IN THIS RESEARCH PROGRAMME, MATURE SITKA SPRUCE TREES (PICEA SITCHENSIS (BONG.)CARR.) WILL BE SAMPLED, USING BOTH DESTRUCTIVE AND NON-DESTRUCTIVE SAMPLING TECHNIQUES. THE TWO TYPES OF SAMPLES WILL BE TESTED FOR SPECIFIC WOOD PROPERTIES, INCLUDING : 1. WOOD STABILITY, 2. MECHANICAL STRENGTH PROPERTIES, 3. WOOD DENSITY AND 4. PULP AND PAPER PROPERTIES.

TWO OTHER LABORATORIES ARE INVOLVED IN THIS PROGRAMME AS SUB CONTRACTORS, NAMELY FOREST AND WILDLIFE SERVICE, (DUBLIN, IRELAND) AND CENTRE NATIONAL DE RECHERCHES FORESTIERES, NANCY, FRANCE.

WOOD QUALITY IS TRADITIONALLY ESTABLISHED BY FELLING TREES AND CONVERTING THE TIMBER INTO SMALLER TEST SAMPLES. THIS IS A DESTRUCTIVE SAMPLING TECHNIQUE WHICH IS EXPENSIVE AND CAN BE APPLIED ONLY AFTER THE TREE REACHES MATURITY. DURING THE LAST TWO DECADES, NEW LABORATORY METHODS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED, BY WHICH WOOD PROPERTIES CAN BE EVALUATED USING INCREMENT CORES. THESE CORES CAN BE EXTRACTED FROM THE STANDING TREE AT ANY TIME DURING ITS LIFE. THIS NON-DESTRUCTIVE SAMPLING TECHNIQUE CAUSES A MINIMAL AMOUNT OF DAMAGE TO THE LIVING TREE. IT IS CONSIDERED THAT THE TESTING METHODS WHICH USE INCREMENT CORES COULD FORM THE BASIS OF A WOOD QUALITY EVALUATION PROCEDURE WHICH CAN BE APPLIED TO LIVING TREES. THIS NON-DESTRUCTIVE PROCEDURE WOULD PROVIDE VALUABLE INFORMATION FOR FOREST PLANNING AND FOREST PRODUCTS MARKETING.
