Objective
DEFINING PROSPECTING GUIDES BY A GEOCHEMICAL AND THERMODYNAMICAL APPROACH WHICH SHOULD PERMIT THE SELECTION, WITHIN ULTRAMAFIC-MAFIC BODIES, OF ZONES HAVING A HIGH POTENTIAL FOR CONCENTRATIONS OF PLATINUM GROUP ELEMENTS.
PLATINUM GROUP ELEMENTS (PGE) PROSPECTING IS EXTRMELY DIFFICULT AND EXPENSIVE. THE PROBLEM IS TO LOCALISE WITHIN LARGE ULTRAMAFIC-MAFIC BODIES (SEVERAL KILOMETERS IN DIMENSION), LAYERS ENRICHED IN PGE, THE THICKNESS OF WHICH DOES NOT EXCEED ONE METER.
THIS RESEARCH IS BASED ON A GENETICAL HYPHOTHESIS SUGGESTING THAT PGE CONCENTRATIONS RESULT FROM THE REACTION BETWEEN A SILICATE LIQUID ENRICHED IN VOLATILES (CL, H2O, S, AS, SB, TE, HG, NA, K) AND TRANSITION GROUP ELEMENTS (NI, CU, PGE, CR, FE), AND A REDUCING FLUID PHASES GENERATING HYDROGEN BECAUSE OF THE PRESENCE OF CARBON. THIS WOULD SUGGEST THAT PGE CONCENTRATION ARE RELATED TO IMPORTANT VARIATIONS IN PARTIAL PRESSURES OF WATER, SULPHUR, OXIGEN AND CO2, THE VALUES OF WHICH CAN BE OBTAINED BY A STUDY OF NATURAL SAMPLES. THE STUDY WILL CONSIST OF: EQUILIBRIA BETWEEN SILICATES; VARIATIONS OF CUMULATIVE SEQUENCE; EQUILIBRIA BETWEEN SILICATES AND SULPHIDES; NATURE, QUANTITY AND CHLORINE CONTENT OF HYDROXYLCONTAINING PHASES; CONCENTRATION AND ISOTOPIC COMPOSITION OF CARBON; NATURE OF FLUIDS ASSOCIATED WITH PGE-RICH HORIZONS; MINERALOGY AND CRYSTALLIZATION SUCCESSION OF SULPHIDES AND PGM; VARIATIONS IN OXIDE COMPOSITION.
BY COMPARING THESE VALUES WITH A REFERENCE SERIES (BUSHVELD), AND DOING EXPERIMENTAL MODELLING (PGE SOLUBILITY IN MAFIC SILICATE LIQUID AS A FUNCTION OF THE OXYGEN FUGACITY), ONE CAN CONSTRAIN THE AREA TO BE INVESTIGATED IN DETAIL.
IT IS INTENTED TO APPLY THIS APPROACH TO TWO COMPLEXES:
- KADIOLO, MALI (STRATIFORM INSTRUSION) WHERE PGM HAVE BEEN FOUND IN PYROXENE-RICH ROCKS.
- TIEBAGHI, NEW CALEDONIA (OPHIOLITIC SEQUENCE) WHERE AN IMPORTANT CHROMITE BODY UNDER EXPLOITATION CONTAINS PGE.
THIS RESEARCH WILL BE COORDINATED WITH THAT DESCRIBED FOR CONTRACTS MSM 089 (OPEN UNIVERSITY) AND MSM 116 (UNIVERSITY OF COPENHAGEN).
