Objective
OPTIMISATION OF TRETMENT PARAMETERS AND PROPERTIES OF STRUCTURAL CLAY MATERIALS TO OBTAIN SUITABLE PHASE COMPOSITIONS.
THE PROJECT CONSISTS OF TWO STAGES.
IN THE FIRTS PHASE, THE FOLLOWING PARAMETERS WILL BE INVESTIGATED ON SELECTED MATERIALS:
- THE PHASE COMPOSITION OF THE FIRED PRODUCTS: PHASE ANALYSIS (IDENTIFICATION, COMPOSITION, QUANTITY); PORE STRUCTURES AND DISTRIBUTIONS; TEXTURES AND INTERGROWTHS. QUANTIFICATION OF THE PHASES WILL BE ESTIMATED BY X-RAY DIFFRACTION AND OPTICAL TECHNIQUES;
- THE PROPERTIES OF FIRED PRODUCTS: APPARENT DENSITY; MECHANICAL PROPERTIES, I.E. STRENGTH TESTS AND MODULUS OF ELASTICITY; WATER ABSORPTION OF DATA OF PRODUCTION UNITS CONCERNING THEIR TREATMENT PARAMETERS AND THE PROPERTIES OF THE END PRODUCTS;
- THE ANALYSIS (PHASE COMPOSITION AND PROPERTIES) OF LABORATORY TEST SAMPLES OBTAINED BY DILAMOTRIC EXPERIMENTS OR IN SPECIFIED CONDITIONS.
A WORKING MODEL WILL BE ESTABLISHED COMBINING THESE INTERRELATIONSHIPS. THE EXPERIMENTAL PART WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN THE SECOND PHASE AS FOLLOWS. THE WORKING MODEL WILL BE TESTED AND APPLIED IN THE FIELD OF MELT FORMATION AND RECRYSTALLIZATION. THE MELTING PROCESS WITH ITS GLASS-PHASE PRODUCT WILL BE STUDIED BY MIXING DIFFERENT TYPES OF CLAY AND BY USE OF ADDITIVES. THE EFFECTS ON THE BEGINNING OF MELTING (EUTECTIC), ON QUANTITY AND VISCOSITY, AND ON THE DEGREE OF SIO2 SATURATION WILL BE INVESTIGATED. THE INFLUENCE OF DIFFERENT FILLERS WILL BE STUDIED.
ATTENTION WILL BE DIRECTED, FOR THE RECRYSTALLIZATION PROCESS, TO THE FORMATION OF HIGH TEMPERATURE PHASES, ESPECIALLY TO THE MULLITE FORMATION, IN ORDER TO FIND MINERALIZERS WHICH INCREASE THE KINETICS OR LOWER THE TEMPERATURE OF FORMATION.
THE FOLLOWING TECHNIQUES WILL BE USED: OPTICAL MICROSCOPY AND SEM, WITH MICROPROBE; X-RAY DIFFRACTION TECHNIQUES; THERMAL ANALYSIS (DTA, TGA) AND DILATOMETRY; MODULUS OF ELASTICITY; STRENGTH TESTS AND HEATING EXPERIMENTS UNDER SPECIFIED CONDITIONS.
TNO (THE NETHERLANDS), LAB. METALKUNDE KUL (BELGIUM) AND GEOS (BELGIUM), AS WELL AS CENTRO CERAMICO (BOLOGNA; ITALY) WILL COLLABORATE ON VARIOUS PARTS OF THIS PROJECT.
