PREPARATION OF SIALONS FROM CLAY AND COAL FOR USE IN HIGH TEMPERATURE APPLICATIONS.

Objective

TO ENABLE TONNAGE QUANTITIES OF INEXPENSIVE SIALON POWDERS TO BE PRODUCED FROM EEC RAW MATERIAL SOURCES AND TO FABRICATE AND TEST REFRACTORIES AND ENGINEERING CERAMICS MADE FROM THESE POWDERS.

THIS PROJECT CAN BE CONSIDERED IN THREE SECTIONS.

FIRSTLY, CONCERNING THE RAW MATERIAL EVALUATION AND SILAON POWDER PREPARATION; AN IDENTIFICATION AND CLASSIFICATION OF CLAY AND CARBON SOURCES OF SUFFICIENT PURITY FROM WITHIN THE EEC WILL BE CARRIED OUT. LOW LEVELS OF CAO AND MGO ARE NECESSARY IF ACCEPTABLE HIGH-TEMPERATURE PROPERTIES ARE TO BE OBTAINED.
SIALON PHASE MANIPULATION WILL BE ATTEMPTED BY THE ADDITION OF AL2O3 OR SIO2 POWDERS TO THE STARTING MATERIALS. THE USE OF ADDITIVES TO STABILIZE SECONDARY PHASE OR TO DEVITRIFY THE VITREOUS PHASES WILL BE ATTEMPTED.
DETAILED ANALYSIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF THE PHASES WILL BE CARRIED OUT THROUGHOUT THE PROGRAMME USING A COMBINATION OF X-RAY AND CHEMICAL TECHNIQUES TOGETHER WITH OPTICAL AND ELECTRON MICROSCOPY.
SECONDLY, FOR THE FABRICATION OF SIALON REFRACTORIES AND MATERIALS CONTAINING SIALON, THE INFLUENCE OF POWDER PRETREATMENTS SUCH AS LEACHING, TO REMOVE IMPURITIES, THE INFLUENCE OF POWDER PRETREATMENTS SUCH AS LEACHING, TO REMOVE IMPURITIES, MILLING AND OXIDATION, AT INTERMEDIATE TEMPERATURES (800[C), WILL BE EXAMINED WITH A VIEW TO INCREASING THE DENSITY AND STRENGTH OF THE SINTERED BODY.
THE DETERMINATION OF APPROPRIATE BINDERS AND FORMING METHODS (E.G. PRESSING, CASTING, EXTRUSION) AND THE OPTIMIZATION OF THE MOST PROMISING METHOD WILL BE MADE.
OPTIMIZATION OF THE SINTERING PROCESS IN TERMS OF TIME, TEMPERATURE AND ATMOSPHERE WILL BE STUDIED. THE DIMENSIONAL CHANGES AND WEIGHT LOSSES OCCURRING WILL BE MONITORED AT EACH STAGE AND, IF NECESSARY, SINTERING ADDITIVES WILL BE INCLUDED.
FINALLY, DENSITY, ROOM TEMPERATURE AND HIGH TEMPERATURE STRENGTH, CREEP RESISTANCE AND OXIDATION RESISTANCE WILL BE DETERMINED FOR SELECTED MATERIALS, TO ESTABLISH THE PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF THE SINTERED SIALON MATERIALS. FURTHER TESTS OF EROSION AND CORROSION IN MOLTEN SLAG AND STEEL, THERMAL SHOCK TESTS, ALKALI RATES/FLUX ATTACK, AND ABRASIVE IMPACT TESTING WILL BE MADE ON THE MATERIALS WHICH APPEAR TO BE THE MOST PROMISING.

THE UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE WILL BE SUBCONTRACTED TO CARRY OUT PARTS OF THIS PROJECT. IN ADDITION TNO (THE NETHERLANDS) WILL BE CONSULTED PERIODICALLY FOR THEIR ADVICE, PARTICULARLY IN THE PARTS OF THE PROJECT CONCERNING AREAS OF CLAY CHARACTERIZATION AND CARBOTHERMAL REDUCTION OF CLAYS.
