TECHNIQUE FOR CLASSIFYING CARBIDE CUTTING TOOLS PRIOR TO REPROCESSING

Objective

DEFINITION OF AN APPROPRIATE METHOD OF CLASSIFYNG USED ITEMS OF CARBIDE TOOLING ON THE BASIS OF DIFFERENCES IN DENSITY, INCLUDING SPECIFICATION OF A PRACTICABLE AUTOMATIC SYSTEM.

THE RESEARCH IS AIMED TOWARDS DETAILED ASSESSMENT OF A CONCEPT FOR DETERMINING THE DENSITY OF USED ITEMS OF TOOLING BASED UPON FUNDAMENTAL MEASUREMENTS OF WEIGTH AND VOLUME. INITIAL IDEAS CENTRE ON A CONTINUOUS PROCESS IN WHICH DISPLACEMENT AND WEIGH WOULD BE MONITORED FOR SUCCESSIVE ITEMS DELIVERED AUTOMATICAL IN A RAPID CYCLE, WITH DIGITAL PROCESSING OF TRANSDUCER SIGNALS ENABLE CLASSIFICATION TO TAKE PLACE. THIS INFORMATIONS WOULD MAKE POSSIBLE THE SORTING OF TUNGSTEN CARBIDE TOOLING INTO APPROPRIATE CATEGORIES FOR REPROCESSING, WITH PARTICULAR EMPHASIS UPON THE PRESENCE OR ABSENCE OF TANTALUM CARBIDE IN THE BULK MATERIAL.

THE RESEARCH WOULD ENTAIL DETAILED EXAMINATION OF SOME PRELIMINARY IDEAS UPON THE MEANS OF ACHIEVING RAPID AUTOMATIC DENSITY MEASUREMENT, WITH EXPERIMENTAL WORK DESIGNED TO SOME OF THE MORE CRITICAL ASPECTS OF THE SYSTEM UNDER CONSIDERATION. THIS WOULD BE UNDERTAKEN IN CO-OPERATION WITH A MAJOR MANUFACTURER OF CARBIDE TOOLING, AND RESULT IN A FUNCTIONAL SPECIFICATION FOR A SYSTEM WHICH SHOULD BE BOTH TECHNICALLY FEASIBLE AND RELEVANT TO COMMERCIAL REQUIREMENTS.

IN ADDITION THIS EFFORT WOULD INVOLVE DESIGN OF A DEMONSTRATION UNIT INCORPORATING STATE-OF-THE-ART TRANSDUCERS FOR AUTOMATIC WEIGHT AND DISPLACEMENT MEASUREMENT, AND A MICROPROCESSOR FOR SEQUENCE CONTROL AND DENSITY CALCULATION. THIS WOULD ASSEMBLED AND TESTED FOR FUNCTION BEFORE DELIVERY TO THE TOOLING MANUFACTURER FOR ASSESSMENT.

THE FINAL STAGE WOULD COMPRISE DETAILED TESTING UNDER VARYING CONDITIONS TO DETERMINE THE RANGE OF USEFUL OPERATION, AND THIS WOULD BE FULLY DESCRIBED IN THE FINAL REPORT, EHICH WOULD ALSO GIVE ESTIMATES OF THE POTENTIAL VIABILITY OF LARGER UNITS IN COMMERCIAL USE.
