ELECTRON BEAM SURFACE ALLOYING OF CONTACT MATERIALS.

Objective

REDUCTION IN PRECIOUS METAL CONSUMPTION AND DEVELOPMENT OF NEW ALLOYS FOR CONTACT MATERIAL WITH THE USE OF ELECTRON BEAM MELTING TECHNOLOGY.

ELECTRON BEAM MELTING TECHNOLOGY WILL BE DEVELOPED FOR THE PRODUCTION OF CONTACT MATERIALS. LOCAL MELTING AND RESOLIDIFICATION OF A MIXTURE OF DEPOSITED METAL LAYERS BY INTENSIVE HEATING WITH AN ELECTRON BEAM SHOWS A NUMBER OF ADVANTAGES AMOGST WHICH THE MOST IMPORTANT ARE:

- REDUCTION IN THE AMOUNT OF PRECIOUS METALS NEEDED, BY RESOLIDIFICATION OF A SURFACE LAYER METAL MIXTURE ONLY;
- DEVELOPMENT OF NEW AND BINARY AND TERNARY ALLOYS SYSTEMS NOT NORMALLY PRODUCIBLE VIA CONVENTIONAL BULK-CASTING METHODS;
PRODUCTION OF IMPROVED HOMOGENEOUS AND CONTAMINATION-FREE CONTACT MATERIALS;
USE OF A WELL DEVELOPED TECHNOLOGY IN A ONE-STEP OPERATION.

THE PROJECT WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING TOPICS:

- SELECTION OF ALLOY SYSTEMS AND COMPOSITIONS BASED ON THERMODYNAMIC DATA.
PREDICTION OF EXPECTED SOLIDIFICATION MORPHOLOGY AND RELATED PROPERTIES;
- OPTIMIZING EXISTING ELECTRON BEAM EQUIPMENT FOR THE PRESENT APPLICATION;
- PRODUCTION OF MATERIALS BY VAPOUR OR LECTROLYTIC DEPOSITION TOGETHER WITH ELECTRON BEAM SURFACE MELTING;
- CHARACTERIZATION OF THE MICROSTRUCTURE AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THE NEWLY DEVELOPED MATERIALS;
- TESTING OF TYPICAL ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF THE MATERIALS FOR CONTACT APPLICATIONS.

HAZEMEYER HOLEC, THE NETHERLANDS, (SUM-027-NL), WILL CARRY OUT THE FINAL MATERIALS TESTING PART OF THIS PROJECT. FOM INSTITUTE (THE NETHERLANDS) WILL, IN ADDITION, BE ASSOCIATED WITH TU OF DELFT AT VARIOUS STAGES OF THE RESEARCH.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
