POWDER CHARACTERIZATION AND OPTIMIZATION OF FABRICATION AND PROCESSING FOR SILICON-BASED ENGINEERING CERAMICS.

Objectif

DEVELOPMENT OF OPTIMUM PROCESSING FOR THE PREPARATION OF FULLY DENSE SILICON CERAMICS FOR HIGH TEMPERATURE ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS.

SILICON-BASED CERAMICS SUCH AS SIN4, SIC AND SIALONS, HAVE PROPERTIES WHICH MAKE THEM EXCELLENT CANDIDATE MATERIALS FOR ADVANCED ENERGY, HIGH TEMPERATURE APPLICATIONS IN, FOR EXAMPLE, ENGINE AND WEAR COMPONENTS, AND HEAT EXCHANGERS. THE BEST PROPERTIES ARE ACHIEVED IN THE FULLY DENSE FORM OF THE MATERIAL WHICH DEPENDS AMONGST OTHER FACTORS ON THE USE OF FINE GRAINED POWDERS, THE APPLICATION OF SINTERING ADDITIVES, THE USE OF REPRODUCIBLE FORMING PROCESSES AND OPTIMIZED FIRING CONDITIONS.
THE PROJECT WILL CONCENTRATE ON SI3N4 AND THE SIALONS IN THE EARLY STAGES, WITH SIC TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION LATER ON.

THE WORK WILL INCLUDE:

- CHARACTERIZATION OF AVAILABLE RESEARCH AND COMMERCIAL POWDER IN TERMS OF MORPHOLOGY AND SINTERABILITY;
- DESING OF FORMING PROCESSES CAPABLE OF YIELDING STRUCTURES HOMOGENEITY;
- ASSESSMENT OF THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF THE FABRICATED COMPONENTS.

THIS PROJECT IS A FULLY COLLABORATIVE ONE BETWEEN MEC, HARWELL, CENTRE DE RECHERCHE DE L'INDUSTRIE BELGE DE LA CERAMIQUE (CRIBC), BELGIUM (SUT-117-B), NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION LIMERICK (NIHE), IRELAND (SUT-126-EIR) AND THE DEPARTMENT OF CERAMICS OF LEEDS UNIVERSITY (UK). MEC (HARWELL) WILL CONCENTRATE ON THE FORMING, FIRING AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES PARTS OF THE PROJECT.
