Objective
The concerted action on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevalence and risk factors among intravenous drug users (IVDU) in EC and COST countries, is a repeated cross-sectional study conducted in 12 countries. The first wave of the study in 1990 included 200 questionnaires (100 from inpatients and 100 from outpatients) from each participating country.
The drug users recruited were aged 27 (median) and the median age at full time education was 16 years. First drug injection starts 2 to 3 years after the end of education and the main drug injected is heroin. Half of the individuals in the sample state that they have shared injection devices. Those who believe themselves to be positive share less and state that they have acted so to avoid acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Knowledge and attitudes of injecting drug users (IDU) towards drug related preventative measures have reached them as 77% of IDUs state that at least one measure is available to reduce transmission by exchange of needles and syringes and 82% think it is useful. However, measures related to sexual behaviour do not seem to have reached drug users. Measures available for the provision ofcondoms were known by only 44% of drug users and 59% of IDUs never use a condom with casual partners. Safer sexual behaviours are better known to HIV positive IDUs than to HIV negatives and among prostitutes, especially female prostitutes.
A second wave of the study will hopefully confirm these data and provide a better picture of the differing patterns of risk behaviour in relation to HIV seroprevalence in European countries. It will also estimate the change of behaviour over the years in relation to new preventive measures.
