Multiple sclerosis research

Objectif

The Concerted Action aimed at four lines in the field of MS Research:
1. immunogenetics and the identification of risk factors;
2. pathogenesis and basic mechanisms;
3. MRI as a means of studying pathogenesis in vivo and monitoring therapy;
4. standardisation of clinical assessment and the conduct of clinical trials.

These objectives were broad in scope and had to be implemented by standardizing the common European approach to diagnosis and follow-up of the clinical events and the MRI. These standardisations will play a very important role in any future coordinated MS research, because they constitute the common language of clinical research. To this common language has to be added a similar approach of European standardisation in the fields of rehabilitation, neuropsychology, cerebrospinal fluid and neuro-urological and sexual disturbances in MS.

Basic aspects

Two basic aspects, T-cell immunology and Demyelination and Remyelination, play a prominent role in the understanding of pathogenesis. Any causal treatment has to rely on the insight in these two basic aspects, and how they are linked in time and in areas of the brain.
