FPSO INTEGRITY

Objective

The project is aiming at the validation and demonstration of structural integrity assessment for FPSO's operating in harsh conditions such as the Northern North Sea. Turret moored Floating Production Storage & Offloading (FPSO) units are currently introduced in European waters with renowned harsh conditions such as the Northern North Sea, the Atlantic Frontier West of Shetlands and offshore Norway. Important benefits of these units are the ability of moving from one field to another, operation in deep water and the large tank capacity for storage. Hence FPSO's offer solutions for marginal, remote and deep water fields where pipeline infrastructures are lacking or fixed structures are too expensive. Obviously the structural integrity of the FPSO's is crucial for both economics, safety and environment. For these reasons the assessment of this integrity prior and during the operation of the FPSO is essential. In recent years much research in this field has been conducted, however an integral validation and demonstration of the new techniques are not available yet.L%

A two and a half year monitoring campaign on board of the new build FPSO "Glass Dowr" of vessel operator Bluewater and installed on the Durward & Dauntless field of Amerada Hess in the Nothern North Sea will be carried out. Extensive measurement programs register hull stresses, motions, turret loads, anchor line loads and sea climate. The measured results will be used for extensive comparison with the results of the existing computational models. Each of the participating classification societies will run their fatigue analysis models for this vessel and the results will mutually compared.
A robust monitoring system will be designed, manufactured and installed to continuously provide detailed data. The design concerns the hardware set-up and monitoring and analysis software. Measurements will be performed for a period of two and a half year. Two winter seasons (bad weather seasons) are covered. The results will be used as a bench mark data for extensive comparison with the resultsof different computational models.
The evaluation and improvements of procedures as how to incorporate structural integrity assessment in design, engineering and inspection of FPSO's will be summarised in the form of recommendations and guidelines for design and operation.
