Objective
Oil and gas topside processing plant experience a harsh environment leading to corrosion, erosion and potential cracking failure problems. Avoidance of problems requires periodic inspection, monitoring and even shutdown for inspection. RACH aims to demonstrate that it is now possible to link development in corrosion and fatigue damage modelling, and NDT inspection reliability, with quantitative reliability assessment to give a rational basis for inspection scheduling that is cost effective as well as providing adequate safety.
The project will produce a combined analysis for prediction of damage due to either corrosion or fatigue, or a combination of the two. It will estimate the POD (Probability of Detection) and POS (Probality of Sizing) for a range of defects. The damage modelling and inspection reliability data will be incorporated into a probability based analysis to give inspection scheduling. The new methodology will be demonstrated for a typical offshore process train. The work will be evaluated and fully reported.L%
Sample production is now complete.
Equipment Database : debugging and modifications are ongoing.
Characterisation of defects: this task is now complete for bend samples and weld toe erosion samples which are planned for January 1999.
Inspection trials: Magnetic flux leakage, CHIME INCOTEST pulsed Eddy Current and LORUS equipment have been completed.
Reliability and Inspection Scheduling: stand alone programmes have been evaluated and case studies investigated.
Field Trials: planned for March 1999
Meetings: partners meeting planned for January 1999.
PHASE 1. The project definition will specify typical load histories, defects, sites for damage and determine the nature on NDT in current use for topside pressure vessel/piping plant, together with the inspection strategy. This phase will also include the update of a current database containing recent developments in NDT relevant to these applications. Detailed analysis work will be conducted on one or two important application areas typical of structures found on offshore process plant.
PHASE 2. will concentrate on damage modelling and inspection scheduling using newly available software (RISCREL and RAIR). The first part of the work will be to develop limit state functions on corrosion and fatigue modelling. The reliability assessment will use new software allowing easy interfacing and consider first the available inspection reliability data. The database will then be extended to include the results of blind trials conducted on current and newer NDT systems.
PHASE 3. will concentrate on the Demonstration Trials aspects of the project. The trials are planned in two parts, part one being laboratory based trials which will include inspection reliability trials. The POD and POS data obtained will be on samples containing representative defects of adequate number to allow for statistical analysis to be carried out on the data. This will provide the basic information on inspection capability for new and current NDT tools and this will then be evaluated in terms of alternative inspection strategies in a laboratory simulation of field trials.
A series of field trials will also be conducted on selected in-service pressure vessels. These trials should attempt to support the finding of the laboratory trials so that the inspection reliability can be quantified and the methodology of RACH demonstrated.
PHASE 4. will involve evaluation of main findings of the project and producing the project final report.
