Objective
The aim of the Project is to demonstrate that reservoir monitoring can be done efficiently and reliably over any size oil field and over the whole life of the field. The 4-D seismic methodology will allow oil companies to improve reservoir control, to enhance recovery and to reduce production cost and risk.
The main objectives of the project are:
1. To demonstrate the feasibility of seismic reservoir monitoring using water-flooding of a real case study on Gullfaks.
2. To demonstrate that how new acquisition technology performs in combination with vintage data.
3. To demonstrate applicability for inverting multi-discipline data using expert systems.
4. To assess economical feasibility of reliability of seismic reservoir monitoring.
This demonstration will help implementing reservoir monitoring by making it technically and economically feasible to apply in a large number of both new and old oil fields.
European increase in recoverable hydrocarbon reserves is estimated to 274 Million TOE over 20 years.
The preliminary results of the 4D analysis are encouraging and the changes in the seismic responses are consistent with the changes in the hydrocarbon saturations where there are well-controll. However synthetic simulations indicate that pressure changes also might effect the seismic response to the same order of magnitude as the saturation changes. The separation of saturation effects and pressure efffects will need additional constraints.
The preliminary results allowed the operator of the Gullfaks field where the experiments are carried out to identify undrained hydrocarbon compartments that are currently being drilled.
The Project aims to demonstrate Reservoir Monitoring as a feasible tool for enhanced oil recovery from producing reservoirs. The main result from the enhance recovery is expected to come from identification of bypassed oil and improved sweap efficiency.
The project is planned with two time-lapse surveys in addition to an existing baseline survey. Further the survey will be synchronized with a well-logging suite to allow calibration of the seismic response with the well-log response. The innovative parts in this Project are several:
- Seismic source monitoring system for improved repeatability.
- Assessment of seabed multi-components measurements response to reservoir parameter changes. - Assessment of expert system based inversion of multi-discipline data to establish changes in reservoir parameters as a function of production.
- Perform a cost benefit analysis of the performance of seismic monitoring on the Gullfaks case study.
4D seismic, where elapsed time is the 4th component together with spatial dimensions, will be assessed over a producing reservoir where the stimulation of the reservoir (pressure maintenance) is water-flooding. Since the acoustic contrast between water and oil is subtle this is a challenging task where no economical feasibility have been reported reservoir monitoring.
