EUROPEAN SLIM HOLE DRILLING SYSTEM [PHASE 2]

Objective

To achieve a technology enabling oil and gas exploration wells to be drilled in slim hole with safe and economically viable conditions. The exploration and production of petroleum is extremely expensive. However, slimhole technology can assist by :
* obtaining the data required from the exploration phase at a greatly reduced cost;
* providing cheaper development wells in some circumstances.
During the project, a high performance drillstring for small diameter operation was designed and tested at full scale. This was followed by the construction of a complete rig, specifically dedicated to slimhole drilling. This has been tested on several wells, under different geographical and geological conditions. In addition the project, new drilling fluids and cements, which are well adapted to the new hole structure, were investigated together with special coring, logging and testing equipment.
Demonstration wells in Paris basin drilled.
4 wells in Gabon drilled. Drilling cost reduction in line with prognosis. Four geological data acquisitions to impose, considered as successful project.
Exploration and delineation are a major concern for oil companies. The EUROSLIM integrated slimhole system is an alternative, low cost, efficient solution. It provides exploration managers with the data they require at cost savings of between 25% and 50% of more traditional methods.
EUROSLIM comprises new, heavy duty downhole equipment, together with a dedicated surface installation, new muds and adapted exploration downhole tools. In some cases, the new method will allow development wells to be drilled at lower costs.
In the essence drilling of two wells with both various geographical environment and different geological conditions.
Phase 1 : Engineering (mud-cements-hydraulics-downhole equipment - BHA)
Phase 2 : Purchasing and manufacturing (drill - core barrels)
Phase 3 : Demonstration well in Paris basin (4"3/4 or 3"3/8 - 2500/3000 m)
Phase 4 : Demonstration well in Gabon (down to antesaliferous - 4" 3/4 or 3" 3/8 - 3000 m)
Phase 5 : Evaluation - Reporting - Dissemination.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
