Objective
The aim of the project is to demonstrate that an efficient and innovative methodology exists to predict timing of hydrocarbon and CO2 generation and trapping in thrusted areas.The newly developed software Thrustpak will be applied in the Southern Apeninnes in Italy.
The 2D Thrustpak tool and associated concepts are able to :
- reconstruct the structural evolution and associated deformations of foreland and folded thrustbelts;
- model the development of temperature in thrustbelts at present time and through geological time;
- Monitor the onset of hydrocarbon and CO2 generation and expulsion from source rocks into traps, resulting from the temperature history and the Kinetics of the kerogens;
- account for changes in the composition of hydrocarbons during generation and expulsion from the source rocks;
- predict the global composition of trapped hydrocarbons in developing structures;
- predict the generation of CO2 from thermal diagenesis or thermolysis of carbonates
The project will associate Entreprise Oil Italiana SpA in Italy and IFP in France. IFP is the developer of the numerical tool and geochemical techniques. Entreprise co-sponsored the software and is the end users of these technologies.
The project aims at using a recently 2D numerical basin models on an actual case to demonstrate that the quality and quantity of the hydrocarbon charge in thrustbelts can be predicted. The case will be located in a well documented province, the Southern Apennines in Italy.
The project is split up into 4 phases, shared between the proposers according to their past experience :
- data gathering and preparation
- building the structural model and the timing of deformation;
- additional data gathering;
- predicting hydrocarbon and CO2 generation and expulsion.
