TITANIUM RISERS FOR DEEPWATER DEVELOPMENTS

Objective

Economic exploitation of deepwater oil and gas reserves relies very largely on floating production systems which are connected to the wells and export lines by dynamic risers. These risers are suspended from the vessel in a catenary, or series of catenaries so that the surface vessel may safely undergo excursion in position. The trend towards high pressures, high temperatures and highly corrosive well products has raised concerns about the adequacy of current flexible pipe technology and consequently there is interest in titanium alloys.
The main aim of the project is to develop and demonstrate the necessary technologies for the design, fabrication and installation of high specification, titanium alloy, dynamic risers. In order to achieve this aim it is necessary to evaluate the performance of selected alloys and to establish high productivity, cost effective fabrication, inspection and installation practices for applications in offshore, deepwater locations.
Work to date has demonstrated that satisfactory riser designs can be developed for the intended applications which involve deep water, high fatigue, high pressure and high temperature.
Extensive testing of Grade 29 alloy pipe and GTAW welds has produced acceptable results for mechanical properties, fatigue performance and corrosion resistance. Similarly, the preliminary results for radial friction welds have been satisfactory.
Two installation methods have been assessed and shown to be feasible. The first method which involves tow-out of a pre-fabricated riser will be suitable for project with a small number of risers. The procedures and equipment required for offshore fabrication by J-lay method have also been defined. Methods and equipment have been developed for riser manufacturing including the following processes; Orbital GTAW welding, Radial Friction Welding, NDT, heat treatment, pipe surface pre-treatment, sintered product coating of field joints and thermal insulation reinstatement. Work is in progress to fully test and commission the various sub-systems for riser production.
Full testing of the fabrication system will be conducted following receipt of further test pipe.
The work is divided into several element ie :
- Selection of a suitable alloy for the specified service conditions including extensive material testing.
- Perform comprehensive design of the various components of the riser system covering both in-service performance and installation processes.
- Develop and prove the high productivity fabrication processes (welding, heat treatment, inspection and pipe coating) required for economic manufacture of the risers.
- To commission the fabrication and installation equipment.
- To prove the installation methodology.
The workscope involves extensive engineering, workshop trials and testing and will conclude with a demonstration of the developed technologies by the manufacture and trial deployment of a test section of dynamic riser.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
