NEW SEALING SYSTEMS FOR OIL AND GAS WELLS

Objective

Demonstrate the technical and economic viability of inflatable packers reinforced by aramide fibers and reticular compounds in lieu and place of cement to solve locally the sealing problems in the following cases :
- outside drilling casings
- inside the production casing or liner
whatever the well deviation : vertical, high or low angle deviation or horizontal.
Permanent and non-permanent plugs : holding of a differential pressure of 4000 psi at a temperature of 125 deg. C .
The project will consist of demonstrating inside different oil and gas wells the technical and economic viability of inflatable packers reinforced by aramide fibers and reticular compounds in lieu and place of cement, in order to solve locally the sealing problems particularly in deviated and horizontal wells : - outside the drilling casings . preselected zones isolation and at will selection of production zones
- inside the production casing or liner
. setting, under pressure, of temporary, and retrievable plugs below the tubing shoe, for instance straddle packers used for acidizing or plugs installed before a workover to avoid damages of the producing zones and to reinforce the safety during workover operations.
These plugs will hold more than 120 deg. C temperature and will suppport between 2000 to 5000 psi of differential pressure depending on the expansion diameter requested by the oil and gas operators.
It is important to underline that the sealing systems installed inside production casing or liner will be set by using light means of well intervention, such as snubbing, coil tubing or special wireline winch in order to avoid costly and dangerous workover operations.
a) The zones isolation outside drilling casing is realized by inflatable diaphragms made with elastomers reinforced by aramide fibers, a reticular compound is injected inside these diaphragms in order to inflate them and to center the casing in relation to the hole.
Compound is made up with a reticular base product and a polymerisation accelerator.
b) The installation of temporary or permanent plugs inside the production casing or liner is realized by using one or two inflatable diaphragms, reinforced on all the length by aramide fibers. The diaphragm can expand 3 times its resting diameter and retract and expand again several times without hysteresis.
The work programme will consist of :
- first, constructing the basic elements of the sealing system,
- then testing them inside an experimental well,
- then testing inside different oil and gas wells the different sealing systems aimed by the project.
