Objective
This exploratory proposal outlines a programme designed to model key marine biomes, in coastal areas important for the cultivation of marine bivalve molluscs. The work will build upon recent work done in France.
The novel aspect of the research is that parallel surveys will be carried out on several sites, which will allow a comparative nature to the data and, thus, a degree of cross referencing. The outcome of the research will be a data set which will offer shellfish growers better possibilities to predict the production capacity of a site and to manage their cultivation in a sustainable manner.
The work could- also help provide parameters for better design of shellfish holding equipment and for its use on sites. The deliverables of the proposed research will help to maintain the production levels of existing areas, and to Increase production in newer areas.
