Estimation of genetic parameters for seabass

Objective

HERITABOLUM deals with the quantitative genetics of the sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, a species chosen for its major economic importance in all participating countries. None of the European countries presently rearing sea bass and gathered today in this project could expect funds to support a national breeding program as it was the case, 20 years ago, for salmon in Norway or in USA.

Therefore, they have decided to commit their resources in a common European project to produce the scientific and technical data needed for efficient breeding programs i.e. the estimation of the genetics parameters for the major traits of commercial interest (heritability, correlation, genetic-environment interaction, dominance effect, etc.).

The present operation IS NOT a breeding program. It aims at providing a reliable basic information allowing any industry to set up its own breeding program on a sound objective basis and according to their goals and economic constraints.
