Objective
Most nitroaromatic compounds in the biosphere are xenobiotics that result from the manufacture of explosives, dyes, drugs and solvents. The worldwide annual production of DNTs and TNT is about 10³ metric tons. These compounds are toxic for prokaryotes and eukaryotes, and they are also mutagenic; therefore, there is an urgent need for their removal from contaminated sites. This proposal is based on pure cultures and a consortium of strains that degrade DNTs and TNT, and it brings together academic research groups with different backgrounds (molecular biology, biochemistry, engineering, phytoremediation) and companies that operate in situ bioremediation. This combination of expertise will result in the elucidation of the molecular basis for the degeneration of DNTs and TNT, and in innovative treatments for the removal of these toxic compounds.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
