Objective
I met Michaela Gallant in October 1996. She joined the PhD programme in Biophysics upon successfully completing all the admission exams, where she obtained top marks; She started her PhD programme under my supervision in November 1996. During the past three years I have been working with Michaela very closely. She is an outstanding student who gained a very large research experience working with various techniques. In fact during the last three years, she has been instrumental in developing a new culture system, namely the organotypic culture of the rat spinal cord. Michaela has optimised the preparation and maintenance of these cultures, which are used in Italy only in our laboratory and in very few foreign laboratories because of their complexity. She is fully trained to perform single cell recordings in patch clamp, current and voltage clamp configurations, as well as recordings from large population of cells by means of extra cellular electrodes. This experimental methodology has been used by Michaela to study a fundamental question in the field of Neuroscience, namely how a neural network develops and generates rhythmic activity. This is a project that Michaela has approached in a very serious and critical way, always giving her original contributions to it. She is very skilled in carefully analysing data. Her potential for high scientific achievement is also improved by her aptitude to concentrate on scientific problems and to seriously work to elucidate them. Michaela is fully independent in the experimental design and is always open to scientific discussions. Knowing Michaela very well I can also report her extrovert and helpful personality with the other: people in the laboratory. Michaela is certainly among the top 5% of all PhD student trained in our institution. I think that her research training will be highly enriched if she could be given the possibility to develop the proposed future work with Dr Alain Marty.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
