EU advanced workshop biotechnology ethics and public perceptions of Biotechnology

Objective

Ethical issues and public perception of biotechnology are now becoming an integral part of strategic planning for the industry sector. The implementation of this subject in university curricula has however lagged behind. Two previous similar courses sponsored by the European Commission (BIO4-CT96-4857 and BIO4-98-8004) have been held in Oxford, September 22 to October 3 1997 and March 19-30 1999, respectively.

The objective of this proposal are to run the course for a third time with the aim to train a new generation of scientists and engineers active in biotechnology to be aware of the importance of bioethics and public perceptions in our society and to handle issues arising from them in companies and in the public. These are great needs, since the future activities of the biotechnology industry will have to rely on staff that is competent in dealing with these issues in a responsible manner in our rapidly emancipating society.
