A process for the assessment of scientific support for claims on foods

Objective

A network will be set up to critically assess the criteria currently used, and to determine those, which are needed, for the scientific substantiation of health-related claims on foods. This project will build upon the FUFOSEconclusions that claims for enhanced function and reduced risk of disease should be based on studies using identified, characterised and validated markers. Initially, three Individual Theme Groups (Its) will focus on three diverse physiological areas and a fourth ITG will review the existing scientific criteria in different countries. This initial selection of the criteria will be tested and broadened by four Its who will consider four different areas. A Consensus Group will then identify the gold standard principles for assessing the scientific support for claims that will assist those making and regulating claims, and will also increase their credibility for consumers
