Objective
Bioremediation is the use of biological treatment systems to destroy or reduce the concentrations of hazardous wastes from a contaminated site. The present project aims at a technological development which would allow application of bioremediation to sites where biovailability represents a limiting factor.
The project will contribute by developing microcarriers and the necessary movement technologies using hydraulic conductivity and/or electric field in order to deliver oxygen, nutrients and exogenous bacteria from the injection wells into the contaminated zone. Microcarriers will improve the bioavailability of the organic contaminants favouring their desorption from the soil particle. The project is focuses on the organic contaminants polycyclic aromatic compounds, which represent a serious problem of the contaminated sites linked to the aromatic chronic or accidental spills of petroleum in soil.
