Application of bioassays for safety assessment of paper and board for food contact

Objective

The work aims at the development, validation and intercalibration of a short-term biological test battery for safety assessment of food contact paper. The project represents a pre-normative research effort which will be used to launch regulatory harmonisation at EU level on the safety of food contact paper & board. The emphasis will be on cost-effective tests with toxicologically relevant end- points and sample preparation reflecting actual end uses. The tests involved have already been validated in other areas of safety evaluation. Thus the innovative aspect is to optimise them for paper & board and to develop a test battery applicable to actual food packaging. The results will be disseminated to industry, legislators and consumers and will form a common standard for safety evaluation. This will improve the competitiveness of a European industry which, using renewable raw materials, is at the forefront of sustainable development
