Objective
Independent lines of evidence causatively link vCJD and BSE through consumption of contaminated meat products. Almost 200,000 cattle have died from BSE within the last 15 years; hundreds of thousands of humans must have been exposed. Over 100 vCJD cases have been verified, the yearly incidence of death is currently rising by 33%. An unknown number will follow, others may become inapparent carriers, a potential source of inter-human transmission. Risk assessment of the human population to contract vCJD is paramount. We will establish the infectious dose contained in contaminated food in a non-human primate species closely related to man and examine whether the orally induced monkey TSE is transmissible through transfusion of blood or its products. These quantitative values will allow to more precisely estimate the risk of BSE transmission to individuals and the overall human population through contaminated food as well as blood and blood products.
