The future of food safety in the european union: building the european research area

Objective

Despite its importance, the approach towards food safety in Europe has until now been fragmented and young people have had insufficient incentive to work in this field. The objective of this project is to hold a series of seven seminars in 2002 and 2003 on key topics in food safety and its implications for consumers. The seminars will include contributions from leading food safety scientists, regulators, policy makers and representatives from industry and consumer organisations. Young scientists and PhD students will be selected from throughout the EU and from candidate member countries. The expected results of the project are a greater consensus of opinion priority topics in food safety research and improved networking of young scientists and students , encouraging career development and interdisciplinary collaboration.
