Bluetongue & other culicoides-bornes diseases threatening the eu : identification of vulnerable areas by surveillance & gis modelling to aid risk assessment

Objective

Bluetongue virus (BTV) & other Culicids-borne viruses have a track record of incursion into the EU at unpredictable intervals, when they cause severe disease &financial losses to our livestock industry. Indeed BTV is currently present in much of SE Europe. Combining novel & established technologies, including field surveys, satellite imagery, GIS modelling & mapping, & the development of nuclearintron/mtDNA markers for vectors, this proposal will identify the areas of the EU & adjoining countries at risk, the level of risk, the years when epizootics are likely, the regions to which outbreaks may spread & regions that may be considered risk-free, both now & in the future. The results will be applicable throughout thee & adjoining areas & will significantly reduce or prevent losses from Culicids- borne viral diseases by facilitating the application of effective, precisely targeted & timely, control & eradication strategies .
