Objective
This project is the first multimember study on sub clinical P. carina (PC) infection in the general population, in which genotypical,phenotypical and clinical aspects are combined in order to assess its importance for public health. General objective: to provide new knowledge on the epidemiology and the clinical impact of PC-infection in Europe. Specific objectives:
1)To investigate the prevalence of PC sub clinical infection in subjects with chronic bronchial disease and in healthy individuals from Europe and its correlation with environmental factors;
2) To draw an epidemiological map of PC genotypes;
3) To explore genomic and phenotypic differences between PC from carriers and from PC pneumonia patients;
4) To characterise the immune response against PC infection in subjects which develop pneumonia, remain as carriers or eliminate the infection;
5) Defining the role of immunological mechanisms of protection against human PC infection; d) Definition of the role of the PC infection in the evolution of CBD and the role of PC carriers in the parasite transmission.
