Comparative analysis of proteome modulation in human pathogenic bacteria for the identification of new vaccines, diagnostics and antibacterial drug targets

Objective

This network intends to coordinate a group of laboratories interested in proteomicanalysis of pathogenic bacteria using advanced HTS technology, and focussing on the comparison of proteases expressed in physiologically relevant conditions .Comparative analysis of proteases expressed by fully sequenced genomes, and parallel transcript analysis with whole-genome DNA micro arrays , are expected to identify sets of proteins which are surface exposed or used by the bacteria to establish infection, or counteract host immunological defences. Such proteins are obvious candidates for vaccine, diagnostics, or antibacterial drugdevelopment.Pilot studies performed on a panel of selected human pathogens will be conducted in a coordinated manner , adopting common standards. To facilitate comparative studies the data obtained in different laboratories will be collected in a common format, and eventually collected in a newly designed database.
