Mathematical models of lymphocyte homeostasis in hiv infection

Objective

The work within the group headed by Prof. B. Autran described here represents a unique opportunity for the applicant to use her mathematical skills in the analysis of the data generated, and to have an input in the design of the experiments based on insights gained from the mathematical models. Theoretical studies are most useful in the context of collaborations with experimental laboratories, offering opportunities for mutual feedback. Hence, as the applicant is seeking to extend the number of collaborations with European centres -firm links exist with the group headed by prof. R.E. Phillips at the John Radcliffe Hospital, University of Oxford, as a result of the PhD work- the proposed work would be a major asset. The host institution will benefit from having an in-house theoretician because the reductionist nature of experimental work does not always allow for the synthesis of an overall picture of the essential workings of the immune system. Guidance in the theoretical work will be provided by dr. R de Boer (Theoretical Biology, University of Utrecht), who has a track record of publications with experimental groups in the Netherlands (profs F. Miedema, C. Boucher and I. Goudsmit) and elsewhere (G. Pantaleo).
