Objective
In this project the complementary skills of five research groups will be combined to develop a novel class of oral vaccines for fish. Proteins of two viruses (pathogenic for carp or trout), which are able to induce protective immunity, will be produced in potato tubers. These proteins will be produced as such or in combination with so-called antigen delivery molecules, which ensure a faster uptake in the gut. In addition, production of these molecules in plant cells allows a longer protection against degradation in the gut. The tubers containing the best formulation of antigen and delivery molecules will be incorporated into feed and orally given to fish. This approach has been proven to be successful in several mammalian species, but till now was not applied for fish. Especially for aquaculture oral vaccination, when effective, is the most ideal method for mass vaccination of fish at all ages. A variety of immune parameters will be tested to

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
