Objective
The objective of this proposal is to exploit new technologies to identify strain- specific markers for Mycobacterium avian subsp.paratuberculosis (Met), the causative agent of Para tuberculosis. These markers will be identified by Representational Difference Analysis, comparative polemics and phage display technology, will encompass both genotypic and phenotypic traits and, for the- first time will enable differentiation of isolates from different host species. Typing assays will be developed using the new strain-specific markers and will be evaluated using clinical isolates from all over Europe. These data will be analysed to investigate the frequency and relevance of intra- and interspecies transmission. The knowledge gained from these epidemiological data is required for risk assessment with respect to zoometric potential and for the implementation of effective and economical disease control measures.
