Objective
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is worldwide infection, which, even if mostly preventable by vaccination, still remains a public health threat. Critical issue of the actual vaccine prophiylaxis is the need to administer three or more closes of vaccine over several months for achieving immune protection in both healthy individuals and low-responder subjects. Due to the time-prolonged administration, a consistent portion of vaccinees (40-50%) fails to receive the third dose and the resultant reduced regimen induces insufficient response to provide seroprotection. Therefore, strategy to produce an earlier seroconversion/seroprotection rate to hepatitis B vaccine is highly desirable. Recent results strongly support a novel rationale for using IFN-alpha as vaccine adjuvant in humans. We intend to prove the efficicy of IFN-alpha as HBV vaccine adjuvant, in eliciting earlier and higher seroconversion rates, conferring seroprotection with a reduced number of doses in healthy unvaccinated individuals and circumventing the problem of unresponsiveness in individuals potentially low responder to the vaccine.
