Objective
Current developments in Medicine have entailed an impressive growth in the use of Platelets concentrates (PCs) for transfusion. Since PCs are kept in 22°C for up to 5 days after donation, they carry a major risk for bacterial contamination and infected PCs have been reported to be the cause of death in 67-77% of all post-transfusion fatalities. To ensure safe platelet transfusions, screening for bacterial contamination prior to transfusion is necessary. In BDFAST a system based on impedance technology will be developed, that will identify and quantify bacteria in platelet bags. It will be non-invasive, cost-effective, take less than 1 minute and do not require any reagents or specialised manpower. The technology that will be used has previously successfully been used for quality control of microorganism in milk.
