Severe streptococcus pyogenes disease in europe

Objective

The main objective is to improve understanding of the epidemiology of severe group a streptococcal (GAS; Streptococcus pyogenes) disease in Europe. To achieve an integrated picture of these infections, molecular methods for typing and clonal identification of clinical isolates will be used. Strains will also be analysed for antibiotic susceptibility, and resistance determinants will be traced. A novel class of antibacterial synthetic oligopeptides will be evaluated for efficacy in invasive GAS disease, and the mechanism of action will be studied. Furthermore, pathogenic aspects of severe GAS disease, such as proteolytic activation of the contact system, and selected virulence factors, such as surface proteins and superantigens, will be investigated.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.
