Production of high value-added carotenoids and provitamin a in cell factory crops

Objective

Arytenoids are torpedoed pigments very widespread in nature. Dietary arytenoids are able to prevent chronic diseases (myocardial infarction, cancer, macular degeneration) and avitaminosis A. In a previous EU-financed effort, the proposing consortium has obtained genetically modified, high- beta- carotene "yellow rice" a life saving plant in South -East Asia. The present proposal wishes to extend this approach to high value-added arytenoids and crops of European interest. Isolation of novel genes is envisaged, as well as agronomic, genomic and nutritional studies to address the "substantial equivalence" issue between GM and non-GM plants with altered carotene composition.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.
