Biodiversity of methylotrophs and their remediation and biotechnological exploitation

Objectif

Metamorphic bacteria can grow in large scale on cheap substrates such as methane and methanol, and contain unique metabolically versatile enzymes offering enormous potential for clean biotechnology. Organisms currently in culture are not robust/versatile enough to clean up organic pollution in bioremediation processes or for the production of fine chemicals. We propose to examine the biodiversity ofrnethanotrophs in extreme/unexplored environments, using conventional and state of the art molecular ecology techniques to isolate/characterise novel psychrophilic, thermotolerant, acidophilus, alkalophilic, salt and solvent resistantmethanotrophs containing catalytically versatile methane monooxygenase creating portfolio of bacteria for exploitation in bioremediation, and biotransformationprocesses. We will also modify methanotrophs by mutation and metabolic engineering of methane monooxygenase to create new versatile biological catalysts.
