Objective
This proposal aims to initiate the exploitation of novel predominant soil bacteria and to reveal their evolution. Recently discovered Gram-positives represented 20%of all soil bacteria in a Dutch grassland area and are at least in partculturable. Their high competitiveness among other bacteria may suggestantimicrobial activity. Thus, our SME partner who provides straightforward exploitation of active compounds will screen them for health-related secondary metabolites. Their evolution, as visible in their micro diversity, will be investigated by genome analysis. With DNA/reran based techniques we will follow their dissemination through the Netherlands and beyond. Different populations will be located and compared for evolutionary relationships. We will describe the most important soil bacteria hitherto cultured and track their adaptation to different niches and their dissemination through European landscapes.
