Objective
Bioremediation of soil contaminants by microorganisms is in principle a safe, effective, and economic alternative to traditional methods. Its major practical limitations are that a large amount of viable bacteria is required on demand, and the lag-time between inoculation of the soil, and reaching maximum biological activity. At present, this time is unpredictable and may vary between several hours and weeks. This project seeks to address these limitations by using micro encapsulation, which has not been largely applied in the field of bioremediation before. Micro encapsulation will be used to maintain the activity of the microorganisms, even after long storage, and incorporate growth promoters to speed the process. Micro encapsulation is expensive and the project will seek low cost methods for large-scale production of encapsulated bioremediation agents. Two Sees active in the field of bioremediation originate this proposal.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
