Objective
Naturally occurring indigenous soil microbes (mycorrhizal fungi) link root systems of different plant species. These fungi live in symbiosis with their host plants extracting nutrients from the soil via their extensive mycelium, which proliferates in and around the roots of plants, and exchanging these for carbon. Markets for mycorrhizal fungi based products have been expanding for use in poorsoils or in economies where the costs of expensive chemical fertilizer applications cannot be supported. Soil pollution-resistant strains of mycorrhizalfungi are known to exist in post-industrial sites. The project aims to isolate, characterize, and develop methods of mass propagation of these fungi. The main objective will be to accelerate sustainable renegotiation of low-grade industrial land (sedimentation ponds, landfill, quarries, brown field sites and spoil banks) in Western and Central Europe using adapted mycorrhizal fungi in several environments (arid, boreal and temperate).
