Objective
This project intends to advance rhizoremediation - the combined application of plants and root zone bacteria for soil cleaning - in two essential aspects. (1) GM bacteria engineered for in site PCB degradation, will be further developed as bio monitoring strains, i.e. to signal the presence of the pollutant in plant and soil and the efficacy of the bioremediation strains. (2) Molecular detection methods for tracking GM degrader bacteria in the environment will be developed to detect and quantify the GM strains under environmental conditions. Molecular tools may also be used to monitor GM strains following a planned deliberate release. A detailed risk assessment of the GM strains and bioremediation technology will be prepared resulting in a set of guidelines for regulatory authorities and end users.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
