Molecular and engineering approach to anaerobic degradation of recalcitrant xenobiotic compounds: in situ removal of nitro- and aminoaromatic chemicals

Objective

Most amino- and nitro aromatic compounds are xenobiotics resulting from the manufacture of explosives and other chemicals that are toxic and mutagenic. The annual production of these compounds is ca. 10^8 tons and there is an urgent need for their removal from polluted sites. The proposal is based on the availability of novel bacterial strains that degrade these compounds anaerobic ally and the priority of the participant groups and industries on exploitation of the technology based on own patents. The project brings together groups with backgrounds on molecular biology, biochemistry or engineering and two companies working in site bioremediation. This will result in the elucidation of the molecular basis for the degradation of these compounds and will lead to innovative treatments for the removal of these toxic contaminants. Validation of the technology will be done in site and under field test conditions.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
