Automatic system for processing of histological specimens

Objective

This proposal deals with the design of an automatic system for the rapid processing of histological specimens, based on the innovation of an existing Milestone's patent. The targets are to realise a microwave/vacuum-pressure unstable to process until 100 biopsies in 15-60 minutes, to give a diagnosis independent of operator ability thanks to the automation of the system, to eliminate the handling of toxic components for technical personnel and to reduce the reactive from 12 to 2. The unit will consist of a microwave autoclave, vacuum/pressure systems, handling fluids system, heating elements autoclave, robotic system to move the boxes from an autoclave to the other, terminal Palm PC and control Software. This project will bring medical, sanitary and economical benefits: nowadays histological preparation of slides requires 12-16 hours, so that the times from fresh biopsy to diagnosis are of some days. With the automation, the processing times will be of 25-5 minutes, depending on biopsy type. The patients will have a reduction of stress waiting anxiety and the possibility of Day Hospital, with diagnosis in the same day of the withdrawal.
