Evaluation of the facilitation of umbilical cord blood transplant engraftment using ex vivo haematopoietic progenitor/stem cell expansion.

Objective

Umbilical cord blood cells collected at birth are increasingly used as a source of stem cells for transplants in patients with malignant and non-malignant diseases. Previous EUROCORD programs have identified prognostic factors for predicting the outcome. Delay of engraftment is the major problem particularly in adults. Using clinical data from EUROCORD Registry, we have identified several factors associated with engraftment including the cell dose and the role of HLA incompatibilities. In this new proposal, we plan to coordinate research on methods to improve clinical results of CBT assaying different strategies aiming to shorten engraftment time and to increase its probability by means of ex-vivo expansion of haematopoietic progenitor/stem cells from cord blood or multiple transplants as well as to better understand the mechanism of immune recovery. Clinical results will be evaluated through EUROCORD Registry.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
